The project aims to translate two measures of parenting scales that have been established in English into Vietnamese, and cross-validate the translations with Vietnamese participants. The measures to be translated include the Coping with Children’s Negative Emotions Scale (CCNES), and the Multidimensional Assessment of Parenting Scale (MAPS).

The CCNES assesses how parents cope with their children’s negative emotions like sadness or anger. The tool considers both supportive and non-supportive parental responses, highlighting parents’ emotional socialisation strategies. The MAPS assesses parenting practices in different areas, such as warmth, discipline, control and engagement.

These two scales have been used extensively in research with English speaking participants and other popular languages such as Chinese and Spanish. To aid the replicating efforts of research parenting with the Vietnamese participants, and to further examine the benefits of parents’ modelling and teaching their kids about emotions, those measures need to go through a rigorous process of translation and cross-validation in the Vietnamese language. For future research to compare and collate research findings from different languages, it is necessary that the individual studies use the measures that are stable across cultural contexts and equivalent across languages.

Currently, Vietnamese versions of those three scales are not available in any publications that used those scales. Authors of the original scales have given written permission for their scale to be translated and validated in open-access publications.
