The research project looks at the relationships among parent’s emotional regulation, parenting belief and how parents report their child’s behaviour.
in this project, we are interested in parent’s perceptions of children (also referred as parental attribution) as they have direct influence on beliefs around parenting and behaviour, which shapes child development. We are also interested in parent’s practises of emotion regulation, as parents teach their children emotional competence and appropriate expression (also referred to as emotion socialisation). Different facets of parenting behaviour can be combined and described as an overarching style, differing in levels of warmth vs hostility and autonomy vs control.
Child social outcomes, such as making friends, reactions to peer pressure and social behaviour, is often used as an indication of children’s social adjustment in parenting research (where more positive social behaviours are indicative of better outcomes).
Therefore, this study aims to understand how emotion socialisation and parental attribution link with parenting style to explain children’s social outcomes.
Roles:
Honours Theses: This project was completed in partial fullfilment of Peri and Prachi’s Psychology Honours degree, supervised by Dr Ben Lam and Dr Jimmy Mai. Peri and Prachi selected the scales, development of the online survey, and write up two successful Honours Theses from this project.
International Collaboration: Upon completion of the honours theses, the current larger team has been working on a more integrated model on the entire dataset.
- Minh Anh Quang Tran examined the dataset and proposed a serial mediation model, hypothesising the sequential roles of parental factors affecting child’s outcomes.
- Ân Phan ran the analysis and wrote up the method and results sections.
- Truc Nguyen, Binh Tieu Tran Vu and Ngan Kim Hoang Nguyen assisted with the literature review.
- All researchers contributes to the revision of the manuscript.
Status: Writing up manuscript
